MISE YUE KILN

Sept. 5,2024

Mise Yue Kiln is a special type of celadon crafted using traditional Chinese porcelain-making techniques, with immense historical and artistic value.

Mise Yue Kiln can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty and is considered a masterpiece of Tang Dynasty Yue kiln celadon. According to the poem *"Secret-color Yue Ware"* by the late Tang Dynasty poet Lu Guimeng, *"In the ninth autumn, dew covers the Yue kiln as it opens, capturing the emerald hues of a thousand peaks."* This verse praises the exquisite beauty of Mise Yue Kiln. It is named for its secret manufacturing process, which was exclusively used for the production of royal porcelain.

Due to the difficulty and extremely high cost of firing secret-color porcelain, only Xing Kiln and Yue Kiln were qualified to contribute porcelain to the royal court, with Yue Kiln being the only one that contributed celadon. The Yue Kiln, the "imperial kiln" used by the royal court since ancient times, is located at Shanglin Lake in Cixi, Ningbo, Zhejiang. This is where the DRAWSHINE brand originated, and all the exterior materials are currently made from the native porcelain clay and glaze of Shanglin Lake.

Mise Yue Kiln employs a confidential glaze recipe that creates an "icy" and "jade-like" aesthetic on the surface of the porcelain. The glaze layer is particularly thin and firmly bonded to the body.

The production process of Mise Yue Kiln is extremely intricate, involving raw material selection, glaze preparation, **匣钵** (saggar firing), and precise control of temperature and atmosphere within the kiln. Among these, saggar firing is a unique technique in the production of Mise Yue Kiln. Each saggar can only be used once, and it must be broken to retrieve the porcelain after firing, significantly increasing the production cost and difficulty of creating Mise Yue Kiln porcelain.

The body of Mise Yue Kiln is delicate and pure, with small and few pores. The glaze color ranges from bluish-green to bluish-yellow, appearing lustrous and full, resembling a tranquil lake. Its unique shape and glaze color make Mise Yue Kiln stand out among other types of porcelain.

Mise Yue Kiln represents the highest level of Tang Dynasty Yue kiln celadon and is a treasure in the history of ancient Chinese ceramics. Its unique manufacturing techniques and aesthetic effects have had a profound impact on later porcelain production, influencing renowned kilns such as the Southern Song Dynasty's official kilns, Longquan kilns, and Goryeo celadon. It also shaped the aesthetic preferences of society as a whole. At the same time, Mise Yue Kiln is an important artifact for studying the society, economy, and culture of the Tang Dynasty.

Mise Yue Kiln is renowned for its unique manufacturing techniques, texture, and color, as well as its immense historical and artistic value. It is a shining pearl in ancient Chinese ceramic culture and an important part of the traditional culture of the Chinese nation.
